Compiling software is a pain in the ass

Being hosted on Dreamhost is a double-edged sword.

  • On one hand, you get the freedom to install pretty much whatever you want on your account (aside from most programs which require a persistent process)- you can run bleeding-edge versions of your scripting language of choice, you can add extensions yourself (without having to wait days or weeks for tech support to do it).
  • On the other, you have to compile the software yourself.

It seems that one of the upgraded libraries I’m using for my PHP 5.2.3 build doesn’t want to play nice with PHP- any new compiles I do with the upgraded versions get borked. Running the exact same compile script with older versions of the libraries works perfectly fine.

Currently, I’m in the process of finding out which upgraded library is the one causing the problem- my prime suspect is version 1.0 of libidn.

So basically, you might get the odd error or two over the next day or so- but once I’ve got this niggling bug fixed I’ll look at compiling in an opcode cacher to improve the performance of the WP:MU installs that power SLOpenID and SL Birthday.
